Roma target Dejan Lovren, why is this good news for Manchester City?

Roma are lining up a move for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren as a replacement for Mehdi Benatia - opening a move to Manchester City this summer.

Roma are lining up a move for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren, according to latest reports from TalkSport.

The Italian giants seem to be preparing a replacement for Moroccan central defender Mehdi Benatia, who has continued to be involved in speculation linking him with a move away from the capital outfit.

The 27-year-old moved to his current club from Udinese for 13.5m euros last summer and has since enjoyed a dazzling first season that has seen him catch the eye of the continent’s elite clubs.

Roma boss, Rudi Gracia, had previously stated that he would not be leaving the Stadio Olimpico, but an approach for Southampton’s Dejan Lovren would suggest that the Italian outfit are resigned to losing their star defender.

Manchester City could view this speculation as a foot in the door, at the very least. After all, Benatia appears to be open to a move to the Etihad. He has previously listed the Sky Blues as one of three clubs that would be a ‘dream’ to play for, along with Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

The 27-year-old is rated at around £25 million and would push to be first-choice partner to Kompany, ahead of Martin Demichelis and the fit-again Matija Nastasic.

City are looking to strengthen a number of areas over the summer months, despite their recent Financial Fair Play (FFP) ruling, with defensive reinforcements remaining a priority.

The club have received a heavy fine, a reduced Champions League squad and a limit on transfer spending for next season. Nonetheless, they continue to be linked to a number of big money signings.
