Chelsea should have asked for Verratti in part-exchange for David Luiz

With the Blues seemingly in need of a central midfielder, making an attempt to include Marco Verratti in the deal to sell the defender would have made sense.

Chelsea have offloaded David Luiz for a considerable profit, with the Brazilian’s sale to Paris Saint-Germain helping to balance the books and keep UEFA off their backs.

However, with Luiz’s versatility to play in midfield no longer an option and Frank Lampard also set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, a player for the boiler room looks set to be on the west London club’s hitlist.

Although the financial boost is will be welcome, Chelsea could well have saved themselves a job by requesting a certain PSG player as part of the Luiz deal.

The Blues need a box-to-box player that can dictate possession and provide a creative force in their boiler room. Marco Verratti would have been a perfect addition to their squad.

Although the Ligue 1 champions would have been reluctant to let the Italy international go, if they were willing to pay so much for Luiz then Chelsea could have requested Verratti as part exchange.

The 21-year-old has the potential to be a driving force at club and national level and is widely expected to be the man to replace Andrea Pirlo in the Italy side in the long term.

Verratti is an important player for the French side, but with Laurent Blanc’s men seemingly keen to bring Paul Pogba to Paris, there could have been scope for a deal.
