He was expected to leave the club this summer, but influence from their Brazilian captain could see Alex sign a new deal in Paris this summer.
The signing of David Luiz by Paris Saint-Germain was meant to mean the end of Alex’s career in France. The former Chelsea defender is out of contract this summer and it was heavily reported he would be leaving with AC Milan, Galatasaray and other clubs interested in the 31-year-old. However, in the last few days there has been talk in France that PSG will offer the veteran defender another deal and look to cash in on the Brazilian youngster Marquinhos.
Reports of Alex’s new contract have come as a huge surprise. Only days ago the reports were very clear that the centre-back was very close to signing a deal with Italian club Milan, but even Laurent Blanc commented that the Brazilian’s future was complicated and there was no clear outcome.
It was meant to be that David Luiz would come in and Marquinhos would continue his development as PSG’s third-choice centre-back. If Alex was to sign a new deal in France it would push Marquinhos back a spot and could lead the 20-year-old to leave Paris this summer.
Alex has been the experienced older head next to captain Thiago Silva this season, he was still able to make 31 appearances and although he perhaps is not up to the level PSG want when they challenge for the Champions League, he is definitely more than able to play in Ligue 1 and rarely looked out of place.
Another theory is the increasing influence that Thiago Silva has within PSG and that the signing of David Luiz and the new contract for Alex would be at the demand of the 29-year-old defender. Since making his move from AC Milan, the Brazilian international has made his demands known to the PSG staff, and in order to keep him happy and keep him at PSG, he has been given a say in what business the club does.
David Luiz is Thiago Silva’s partner in the Brazil national team, and with his trust in Alex higher than his trust in Marquinhos, it is clear to see the captain’s influence in these decisions.
Now it seems that the ball is in Alex’s court, it now depends on where he sees his future. If he wants to stay in Paris it looks like a deal will be there for him. If he wants to leave, there are a few deals already on the table for the former Chelsea man.
