The World Cup is not only football's biggest tournament, but it also serves as a shop window for players to impress onlooking clubs.
Liverpool's title challenge ultimately fell short as Manchester City stole in to take the crown in the final week of the season. Regardless of that late disappointment, Champions League football is finally returning to Anfield, and manager Brendan Rodgers will need to strengthen his squad if Liverpool are to compete domestically and in Europe.
There is bound to be a large transfer kitty at Rodgers' disposal this summer, and with the World Cup on the horizon, there will be a number of players catching his eye. Here are five players who will be playing in Group D that could be on Rodgers' radar this summer...
Keylor Navas, Costa Rica
Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet endured an up-and-down season following his move from Sunderland, and with little competition behind the Belgian, it's believed that Rodgers will look to add another goalkeeper this summer. Levante's Navas has impressed in La Liga this season, and is subsequently drawing interest from the Reds - with the Costa Rican having a release clause in his contract of just €10m.
Adam Lallana, England
Rodgers is also looking to acquire more attacking midfield players - whether that's through the centre or out wide. The Reds missed out on bids for Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Willian, Mohamed Salah and Yevhen Konoplyanka, which has led Rodgers to target Southampton star Lallana. The midfielder should play a big role for England this summer, but is likely to cost at least £20m to prise away from the South Coast.
James Milner, England
As part of Liverpool's pursuit of midfielders, they have also been linked with a move for Manchester City's James Milner, who can play both out wide and in the centre. The former Leeds, Newcastle and Aston Villa star has found first-team football hard to come by under Manuel Pellegrini and in a bid to feature more regularly, it's believed that Milner will look to leave the club this summer - and Liverpool are reportedly watching with intent.
Antonio Candreva, Italy
Another rumoured Liverpool target in a bid to improve their midfield, Lazio's Candreva has racked up 12 goals and six assists for the Rome club in an impressive campaign. The 27-year-old has really emerged during this campaign and is now going to be part of Cesare Prandelli's Azzurri side this summer. With his stock rising, the World Cup could make Candreva a household name.
Abel Hernandez, Uruguay
Whilst Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez have both been outstanding this season, there is little depth behind them given Iago Aspas' struggles in his first Premier League season. In a bid to keep their potent attack as one of the most deadly in the Premier League, Rodgers will look to add another striker - and Palermo's Hernandez has been in superb form this season, with a World Cup place now his.
