Ander Herrera is being tipped to replace Cesc Fabregas at Barcelona next season if the former Arsenal star leaves the Nou Camp.
Last year, both players were heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, and yet both stayed exactly where they were.
But another close-season means another hefty pile of rumours to sift through, and Fabregas was near the top almost as soon as the La Liga campaign came to an end.
The Spanish international’s future at Barcelona has been in question so often there must be something to the stories. And following reports that the Catalan club are willing to cash-in on the player this summer, United found themselves back in the headlines, if only temporarily.
It has since been reported that Louis van Gaal has no interest in Fabregas, leaving Arsenal as the clear favourites from the Premier League if they wish to bring their former player back to the club.
There has always been a clear and unbreakable bond between Fabregas and the Gunners faithful, and if he does return to North London, it would be a huge coup for Wenger.
But wherever he ends up, if indeed he does leave this summer, Barcelona will need to replace him. And according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo that replacement will be Athletic Bilbao midfielder – and former United target – Ander Herrera.
A few wheels have to turn in a certain order for this one to come to pass, but it would be a bitter pill for United fans to swallow if they see two of last season’s prime targets move on just 12 months later – but neither to Old Trafford.
