Luka Modric may have been one of the best players for Real Madrid this season – and maybe even the best – but Graeme Souness remains unconvinced.
In the build-up to Sky Sports’ coverage of the Champions League final between Los Blancos and Atletico Madrid on Saturday, the former Liverpool and Rangers midfielder identified the Croatia international as the ‘weak link’ for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
The 61-year-old’s comments did not go down well among many football followers, particularly a certain Arsenal player. As soon as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain heard Souness’ comments about Modric, he took to social networking site Twitter to give his opinion, hailing the Madrid midfielder as “world class”.
Have I just heard Graeme Souness say Modrić is a weakness for Madrid and 5-a-side player?? Can't agree with that! He's world class!— Alex Ox-Chamberlain (@Alex_OxChambo) May 24, 2014
Modric struggled in the first half of the 2012-13 season and was written off as a flop by the Spanish media. However, the 28-year-old began to turn on the style in the second half, and this campaign he has been one of the best in the world - the heartbeat of a Madrid side who have just won their 10th Champions League crown.
The former Tottenham Hotspur star had a very productive game in Lisbon as well, as Ancelotti’s side defeated city-rivals and Spanish champions Atletico 4-1 after extra-time. He made a number of runs as the match progressed and looked very creative when the opposition players allowed him space.
On Saturday, Modric proved that he is not the weak link of Madrid – he is the man who makes them tick.
