This week saw Paris Saint-Germain decide to splash their cash once again with the impending deal for David Luiz on the brink of completion. The Brazilian is set to move to PSG for a fee in the region of £40 million, making him the most expensive defender of all time in the process.
The man he overtakes in that respect is now a club team-mate as well as an international team-mate in the form of Thiago Silva. But what about another expensive and talented defender at the Parc des Princes?
The future of Marquinhos has been thrown into doubt with the signature of Luiz. The 20-year-old joined PSG last summer for a whopping fee of €31.4 million - but he has now admitted doubts over his future as a result of Luiz's arrival.
Barcelona are said to be interested, and Marquinhos has told reporters:
"If Barca is interested in me, obviously, that's something nice! I have a contract that goes until June 2018. Now, we'll see. I do not know. Anyway, I will talk with the club and my agent about my future because this will be a very important season for me. I have to say that David is a friend. He's a great lad and a great player. Besides, I think he made the right choice by committing to PSG but, when you see players like David Luiz arrive, it will be even harder for me."
But Barca's interest is one thing, should Manchester United be keen. The club are set to lose Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer, so a central defensive option is certainly something to be considered.
And the club have tried to sign him before. Last summer the players' agent made it clear that United were keen on the signature of the Brazilian:
"There are offers from PSG, Manchester United and Barcelona. Roma have told us that there is a possibility of selling the player for the right price and we will respect the decision they make. I can confirm that I was in Barcelona but that was a long time ago and Marquinhos is not my only client."
The problem of course here lies in the fact Barca also need a new central defender, and Marquinhos is the perfect option.
But if United want quality at the heart of the defence then they could do a lot worse than the talented lad from PSG.
