Xabi Alonso has revealed that he will always have a special place in his heart for Liverpool, and that he feels part of the Anfield family.
In an interview with beIN SPORTS later published by LiverpoolFC.com, the Spanish international spoke about his time at Anfield as he built up for a Champions League final he will sadly play no part in due to suspension.
But he had only kind words to say for the side that he was tipped to return to as recently as last summer – although that ship now appears to have well and truly sailed.
“Liverpool was a very important part in my footballing career,” Alonso said. “Anfield is a beautiful stadium and it has a certain charm and style that is very difficult to find in other stadiums. So I miss it a little bit, I really enjoyed the time I spent in England.”
Alonso had been tipped to leave Real Madrid as he approached the end of his current deal. But the Spanish international has since signed a new two-year contract extension that will see him remain at the Bernabeu until at least the summer of 2016.
The Liverpool fans will always have very fond memories of the midfield maestro’s time on Merseyside. And it appears the player is just as enamoured by his former club.
“I have been very committed to all the teams that I have played for and each club that I have been a part of is very important to me,” he added.
“Because of that, I feel like part of Real Sociedad, Liverpool and Real Madrid family.”
It is only a shame that he cannot help his current club when they take to the pitch for their biggest game of the season, having enjoyed a similar night all those years ago in Istanbul.
