Chelsea 'keeper reveals his bizarre toilet selfie pre-match ritual

Thibaut Coutois

Thibaut Courtois, currently on loan at Atletico Madrid, has revealed what he gets up to before a game.

Tonight sees Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois potentially play his final game for loan club Atletico Madrid before returning to his parent club - even if that does not seem like something he is very keen on.

Since replacing Manchester United bound David De Gea at the Vicente Calderon he has become arguably the best goalkeeper in the world and Jose Mourinho is known to be a huge fan of his.

But the Belgian also has competition at Stamford Bridge in the form of Petr Cech. Neither stopper will want to play second fiddle, so Mourinho essentially has a decision to make regarding their respective futures.

But before all of that Courtois has to keep goal against the Real Madrid super-triumvirate that is Bale, Ronaldo and Benzema in order for Atletico to be crowned the kings of Europe as well as Spain this season.

Courtois has been speaking a lot this week in the run up to the game, but in an interview with Sport.be he revealed his pre-match ritual - which is a little odd to tell the truth.

Here is what he told Raf Willems earlier this week:

"Before a game, I always enters at the same time in the corridor leading to the ground. I also send an SMS to my girlfriend to say I'm going to change and ask her not to send me message from this time. I always removed my shoe and my left sock first because I'm left-handed. Then I go to the bathroom, I take a picture of me on the potty and I send it to four friends in Belgium. We wish good luck to each other because they also have games on the weekends. Yes, I sent a photo of the toilets from the Nou Camp to the Bernabeu."

"I also wet my gloves the finger tip, and before warming up, I hit my shoes against the right post then against the left post before hitting the fist in the middle of the goal. After that, I'm in a trance and nobody can destabilize me. "

It is often said goalkeepers are the most superstitious but Courtois' bathroom selfies have to be one of the more interesting ritualistic behaviours before heading out for 90 minutes of battle.

So expect Courtois to take a little trip to the bathroom at the Stadium of Light this evening - or else his trance may be disrupted.
