Although local daily the Eindhovens Dagblad has stated that the Red Devils are yet to contact PSV regarding a deal for Depay, several news outlets across England have claimed that United could snap up the young winger in the upcoming transfer window.
Manchester United has been linked with PSV Winger Memphis Depay, great player and has an attractive price (€15-18m).— Rafael Hernández (@RafaelH117) May 22, 2014
Depay is a 20-year-old attacker usually deployed on the left side of midfield. Since his debut in 2011, Depay has made 60 league appearances for PSV, scoring 17 goals.
The Netherlands international is a modern inverted winger, often drifting inside to shoot or pass from his stronger foot. He has a peculiar eye for goal and is known for his long-range shooting abilities. Depay scored seven goals from outside the 18-yard-box last season, which is just four less than what the entire United team managed.
He is tricky, intelligent, unpredictable and pacey.
Unlike United’s current wingers, Depay is abundant with creativity, averaging 2.6 key passes and 3.1 dribbles each game. No United winger matches the lad in those two segments.
The Dutchman is hardworking, will score goals and create chances for his teammates.
However, he does have a downside. Depay is not the finished product yet, which you may expect for a 20-year-old. He has often got into trouble owing to his attitude. He has been involved in bust-ups and can often lose control of his emotions.
However, with the right guidance Depay can develop into an excellent winger. He has traits of Cristiano Ronaldo and the potential to be as influential as the Portugal international.
Since Louis van Gaal is appointed as the United manager, there is bound to be Dutch influence at Old Trafford next term. Almost all of the young players from Netherlands will be linked with United and Depay is one of those.
It’s not certain whether United are serious about the prospect, but in case they are, Depay is a promising player who could develop into an excellent winger in the future.
