Report - PSG feel Mourinho has completely misjudged David Luiz

PSG are reportedly closing in on a deal for Chelsea defender David Luiz.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly set to make Chelsea defender David Luiz one of the highest paid defenders in global football.

PSG are reportedly circling around the Brazilian like a hungry shark, ready to pay a huge fee for the Chelsea star to get a deal done before he jets off for the World Cup in front of his home fans.

The Daily Mail has suggested that PSG believe Mourinho has completely misjudged the technical skill and style of the player, based around the Portuguese’s unwillingness to use Luiz regularly in his back four last season.

“PSG believe they are capturing one of the most stylish defensive players in the world and last night it looked as though they are ready to pay the figure demanded by Chelsea,” reports the Mail.

The perception which has been reported in relation to Mourinho’s views on Luiz is that he had, and still has, doubts over his defensive capabilities.

Luiz is a risk taking central defender, someone who likes to step out of his defensive position to try and intercept the ball or make a tackle higher up the field, which can sometimes leave his centre-back partner exposed.

It’s no secret that Mourinho’s teams are drilled around defensive discipline and playing tight football across the back four.

Two great examples are how Chelsea played against Manchester United and Liverpool away from home last season with Luiz not starting either game.

Both of those performances were based on playing very tight and sensible defensive football, contradicting the way Luiz traditionally likes to play as a defender.

To ease the pressure to play him, Mourinho adopted a similar principle shown by interim boss Rafa Benitez from last season, moving Luiz forward into more of a holding midfield role.

PSG could well be more suited to his style of play because they are a side that enjoys a very dominant position in French football, which allows them to take more risks.

It is a little strange considering that Laurent Blanc was not a flamboyant defender himself, but if the Blues get the cash they’re demanding for the Brazilian then they won’t be too bothered as he’s not joining a domestic rival who can hurt them.
