Manchester United will have to replace Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer and AC Milan defender Cristian Zapata could be amongst their targets.
United were linked with Zapata ahead of the January transfer window with scouts being sent to San Siro to watch him in action, but no deal came of it.
The Colombian centre-back can also play as a full-back and brings versatility as well as authority to the defence.
However, Zapata has always rejected links to Man United, insisting he is happy in Milan and not looking for a move.
The 27-year-old has also revealed that he rejected a move to Liverpool in 2011 when he opted to join Villarreal instead.
Zapata initially joined the Rossoneri on loan in 2012 but last summer he made that switch permanent and seemed to be building a future at the centre of Milan's defence.
But the arrival of Clarence Seedorf saw Zapata's opportunities limited somewhat and he may be considering his options, although it now looks likely that Seedorf will be sacked.
Milan, like Manchester United, are still reeling from a nightmare season and won't even be in the Europa League next term.
A large turnover of personnel is expected in the summer and Zapata may see this as a good time to jump ship.
