Four players Arsenal could break their transfer record on this summer

Javi Martinez Appearing For Spain Under 21s

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is expected to follow the Gunners’ FA Cup triumph this term with some spending this summer.

The 64-year-old French coach could be handed up to £100m to spend by Arsenal this summer, according to reports, less than 12 months after the club smashed their transfer record to sign Mesut Ozil for £42.4m from Real Madrid.

Here are four players who could be targeted this summer for a new club record transfer.

1) Karim Benzema

(Price Range: £40m - £45m)

Widely regarded as a primary target for the Gunners due to his reduced status at Real Madrid, the 26-year-old France international would fit the mould of a Wenger purchase ideally – he’s French, a world-class striker at one of the best clubs in the world, is the optimum age to hit his peak, and already has a relationship on the pitch with former teammate Ozil and France colleague Olivier Giroud. Real Madrid are, however, infamously fierce and fickle negotiators and this could end up becoming one of the most protracted sagas of the summer if Arsenal don’t move fast.

2) Mario Balotelli

(Price Range: £40m - £45m)

Arsenal already know a thing or two about the feisty Italian international from his days at Premier League rivals Manchester City. Known as a wild child, a controversial and often divisive figure, perhaps Wenger could take a risk on the AC Milan striker, in the hopes of getting the best out of the boisterous forward. It would take a handsome offer to convince the Serie A giants to sell, given that his contract runs until 2017 but a return to England may well be on the cards for Balotelli, especially if he gives a good account of himself at the World Cup in Brazil.

3) Javi Martinez

(Price Range: £40m - £45m)

The 25-year-old Spain star could be readying himself for an exit from the Allianz Arena this summer but it would likely take a huge bid to convince Bayern Munich to let the defensive midfielder go. However, with an aging Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini occupying that position at the Emirates presently, Wenger could be prepared to buy big for the future.

4) Cesc Fabregas

(Price Range: £40m - £45m)

Finally, the prodigal son - the former Gunners captain is heavily linked with an exit from the Camp Nou this summer after another season without cementing a place in the first-team at Barcelona. Manchester United are hot on his heels, as they were last summer under David Moyes, and the arrival of Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford could see the Red Devils make an offer for the Spain international who could reportedly be available for £45m. However, the plot thickens, as Arsenal are thought to have a first right to refusal clause in their agreement with the Catalans over his sale in 2011 – if Wenger is prepared to match a bid, the skipper could be coming home.
