The top five players linked with signing for Manchester United this week: Schweinsteiger, Strootman and more

Bayern Munich, Barcelona and AS Roma stars all feature.

The rumour mill has been working overtime this week if you’re a Manchester United fan after Louis van Gaal was finally announced as the club’s next manager.

The boss may be away finishing his current job with the Netherlands national team, but he seems to have held many phone calls with Manchester United officials, commissioning the club to go after some very good players.

Here are five top stars United have been linked with signing this past week.

Cesc Fabregas (Barcelona)

Fabregas is a player United went after last summer, unable to do a deal. However, he seems to be someone van Gaal is very keen on, with reports suggesting he’s open to a return to England. United have to bear in mind that if they make an offer, Barca are obliged to inform Arsenal.

Toni Kroos (Bayern Munich)

United were thought to be close to a deal, which was started during the David Moyes era. However, van Gaal is thought to have pulled the plug on £20 million plans to snap up the German, believing he’s not the man United need to come in and transform their midfield.

Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Strootman has a natural connection with LvG because of his role with the Netherlands. Strootman would have featured in Holland’s World Cup squad were it not for injury and he’s the sort of player who could add some real grit and aggression, which has been missing from United’s midfield.

Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)

Another Munich star linked with United is experienced German Bastian Schweinsteiger. Twitter chat has linked him with Old Trafford, with some high profile journalists believing Pep Guardiola feels he’s not quick enough around Bayern Munich’s midfield.

Gervinho (AS Roma)

One of the more left field rumours to come from the last few days has seen United linked with a move for the Arsenal flop. They’re reportedly ready to pay £16 million for the player who struggled to make an impact in North London, but Roma want to keep him and improve his contract.
