Thomas Tuchel is the new star of German coaches. Statistics show that he has been more successful at his club Mainz than Jürgen Klopp.
When Jürgen Klopp left Mainz in 2008 after the seven most successful years of the club history, everybody thought that the club would need a lot of time to be that successful again. Nobody could imagine that the new coach would be even more successful than Klopp.
The current coach of Borussia Dortmund was in charge of Mainz between 2001 and 2008. He managed to get them promoted to the Bundesliga in 2004. Then they stayed there for three years while twice finishing 11th and finally 16th which meant the relegation to the second division. After not achieving the direct promotion again, Klopp left to Dortmund in 2008.
His replacement was Jörn Andersen and the former Bundesliga player managed the promotion to the Bundesliga, but got sacked then after some problems with the team. That was when the 36-year old Thomas Tuchel took over the team that had just returned to the Bundesliga.
In the five years since he has been in charge of the team they have qualified twice for the Europa League and have never been in danger of being relegated.
His team play an attractive style and he is responsible for the breakthrough of players like Schürrle, Holtby and Szalai. These players became legends in Mainz and were famous as the Bruchweg Boys, named after the stadium in Mainz, before leaving to bigger teams like Leverkusen or Schalke.
Last season Tuchel qualified again for the Europa League but then decided to quit his job at Mainz. The club refused to cancel the contract until 2015, which is why Tuchel now has a year of unpaid vacation while he is waiting for a new offer from a bigger club. This would not however restrict him from taking another managerial job right now.
Tuchel is seen as a real expert and the only reason why he is not currently coaching a better team in the Bundesliga now is that the top teams at the moment don’t have any need for a new coach. Some outlets have already suggested that he could replace Guardiola some day at Bayern, as he is billed as the most talented coach in Germany.
Mainz has always been a team with one of the lowest budgets in the Bundesliga, so qualifying twice with them for the European League is probably a bigger achievement than winning the Bundesliga with Bayern.
As there are no interesting coaching positions available for him in the Bundesliga right now, he might also consider an offer from another league. Tottenham would be a perfect choice because the team would clearly be a step up compared to Mainz but not one of the top 10 teams in Europe which would too big for him.
Especially Lewis Holtby would probably like to work under his former coach and mentor again, and might then make the step in development that everybody at the White Heart Lane is waiting for.
Tuchel has showed over a couple of years in the Bundesliga that he can get the best out of a team while following a clear tactical plan. There is no reason to believe that his methods should only work in the Bundesliga.
Signing him might seem to be a risk, but everybody who has followed the Bundesliga in the last five years knows that he can become one of the top coaches in Europe one day. Right now it would be the perfect moment to sign him.
