Fernando Torres admission a warning for Chelsea regarding Diego Costa transfer?

Should Chelsea be worried about Diego Costa's recurring hamstring injuries?

Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa faces a battle to be fit this weekend for the Champions League Final.

It's expected to be his last game for the club, if fit, and faces a race against time to recover to feature against Real.

Costa went off with a hamstring injury against Barcelona in La Liga at the weekend, just as he did against the same opponents in the Champions League.

Chelsea are widely reported to be poised to sign the Spanish international, but should they be worried about the nature of the injuries?

In 2011 they signed Fernando Torres for £50 million, and it has been a deal which did not pay off.

SkySports analysis cited hamstring injuries in his last full season at Liverpool as the major reason for Torres losing the edge which made him the Premier League's most feared striker.

Torres even wrote about in his autobiography: "It was a real hammer blow. The first time it happens you think it is normal and you keep going. The second time, you stop, you take more care and you start to ask yourself why it happened.

"The third time, you stop properly, you start to investigate the underlying causes and work as hard as you can to make sure it never happens again. That was even more important in my case, because it was my hamstring that was causing me problems - the muscle I live by, the one that gives you acceleration and speed."

Costa will be 26 in October, the same age Torres was when Chelsea signed him.

They should not necessarily simply write him off because of a unfortunate spell with injuries, but they should be cautious and seek expert advice ahead of sealing the £32 million transfer.

Michael Owen is another forward whose career was ruined by hamstring problems, retiring at 32.

Chelsea may land up gambling that these repetitive injuries in such a short space of time, coupled with Costa's involvement at the World Cup next month could mean their marquee transfer becomes somewhat of a risk.
