A few years ago, Anfield was THE place to be if you were a Spaniard moving to English football.
Rafa Benitez's spell as Liverpool manager ensured the Reds benefitted more than most when it came to bringing Spanish talent to the Premier League. Several players came to Anfield and grew into fully fledged internationals for Spain's all conquering national side. Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Luis Garcia and Alvaro Arbeloa all flourished under the management of their compatriot.
Since Bentiez has left though, the Reds have struggled to have the same success with a succession of promising young Spanish players. Dani Pacheo, Daniel Ayala and Suso are just some of the talent to have come through but failed to seize a squad spot, with the first two being released to lower division clubs.
Even recent signings like Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto struggled to contribute to Liverpool's title-challenging squad in the recent season.
Aspas is heavily linked to depart Anfield this summer, and now Sky Sports is reporting that Liverpool's former Sevilla and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto is also set to move back to La Liga, albeit on loan, with Malaga the most interested of several clubs.
Liverpool paid Sevilla £6.8 million for Alberto after he starred in Barca's second string in Spain's Segunda Division. The 21-year-old had a difficult first season though, making only 12 appearances while failing to score.
The Reds will be hoping he manages to get as much game time as Suso did for Almeria this season, with the winger making 33 appearances in the Spanish top flight.
