On this day: Bayern want Suarez, Arsenal miss out on striker and Vermaelen future

Suarez Liverpool 2

On the 22nd May 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 22nd May 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 22nd May 2013…

Stevan put

Arsenal's long rumoured interest in Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic was officially dead. The Montenegrin attacker had long been linked with a move to The Emirates, with several outlets even reporting the deal done on several occasions.

However Fiorentina sporting director Daniel Prade made it clear Arsenal were not on the agenda:

"The way I see it, this interest is non-existent. I have not had any contact with them at all. I don't think Arsene Wenger is interested in the boy. I have not been authorised in any way by my club to speak to Juventus. Jovetic's situation will be resolved directly by the president. We will see what happens. We would be happy if he stayed with us."

In the end Jovetic moved to Manchester City and has had an injury struck first campaign at the club.

United want Vermael-in

Manchester United were reportedly all set to snap up Thomas Vermaelen after the Belgian defender's poor campaign with The Gunners.

The club captain had been forced to the bench by the excellent pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and United were looking for potential arrivals to help replace the ageing Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

However Vermaelen stayed, but he could be off this summer after another season on the fringes.

And Manchester United need a centre-back, could Vermaelen be their man?

Bayern trying for Suarez

Bayern Munich were believed to be ready to join the growing list of clubs interested in signing Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

Incoming manager Pep Guardiola was said to be wanting to sign the player and make him the star of the show at the Allianz Arena. A £50 million bid was reportedly ready and if it had gone through who knows if Suarez would have stayed.

In the end he did, rejecting Arsenal's advances in the process.

Liverpool fans will hope he is still there next season.
