Alonso puts Ferrari on top in rain-hit second practice

Fernando Alonso

Fernando Alonso gave Ferrari a rare P1 in this afternoon's second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Spaniard set his lap late in the session, much of which saw limited action following heavy rain beforehand.

The wet and newly resurfaced circuit, coupled with the unpredictable nature of 2014-style F1 cars, made drivers very reluctant to risk taking to the track. As such it was almost 45 minutes before they headed out in numbers, with those brave enough using the intermediate tyre.

With just 10 minutes left on the clock over half the field was yet to complete a timed lap, but a handful of drivers did head out on slick tyres. When the slick shod Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso) and Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) began trading fastest times it was clear that dry tyres were the way to go.

Alonso then went fastest before improving his time to a 1m18.482s, which could not be beaten. Morning pacesetter Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was second, with Sebastian Vettel third in his Red Bull.

Vergne eventually slipped to fourth ahead of Valtteri Bottas (Williams) and the Force India cars of Sergio Perez and Hulkenberg. Jenson Button (McLaren), Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) and Kevin Magnussen (McLaren) completed the top-10.

Further back Kimi Raikkonen's session was ended early when his Ferrari suffered gearbox problems, while 2013 Monaco winner Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) was down in 20th after failing to set a quick time on the slick tyres

F1 takes its traditional Friday off tomorrow before action resumes with Saturday's qualifying.
