United to face competition from van Gaal’s former club for Ezequiel Garay - report

Reported Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay is now said to be on the radar of Bayern Munich according to the German press.

Just when you thought it was not possible for reported Manchester United target Ezequiel Garay to be linked with any more clubs, he is.

This time, Sport Bild is claiming Bayern Munich are interested in the 27-year-old Argentine international, just 24 hours after it was being reported he was set for a summer move to Valencia.

Some footballers appear to have set up a second home in the gossip columns, and Garay is one of them.

The Benfica player has been linked with a move to United for many a year, and it appeared that last summer the rumours would finally become reality.

But talk of a done-deal was premature and ultimately Garay stayed exactly where he was; just as he did despite the January links with – and reported persistence of – Zenit St Petersburg.

With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving United this summer, Louis van Gaal will almost certainly sign at least one new experienced centre-back. But if he does have an interest in Garay, he could face stiff competition from his former club Bayern.

According to the most recent report, the Bundesliga champions had a scout watching Garay at the Europa League final. It goes on to claim that Bayern’s sporting director Matthias Sammer will meet with first-team boss Pep Guardiola in the next two weeks to discuss transfer targets, with a new centre-back a priority.

Considering previous summers, it would be no surprise if Garay was still a Benfica player this time next year. But surely he has to move eventually…doesn’t he?
