A select round up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Louis van Gaal believes that only four players currently deserve a starting-spot at Manchester United, according to a report in the Daily Star.

The paper claims that of all the players at the Dutchman’s disposal, he is only convinced that Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and David de Gea can be mainstays in what is being branded his “new-look side”.

Given United’s performances last season, it would come as no real surprise if the report is true. A number of players underperformed for the club last season and they will have their work cut out to prove they have what it takes to remain at Old Trafford.

In other news, the Sun claims van Gaal is targeting PSV Eindhoven striker Memphis Depay.

The 20-year-old is in the new United manager’s World Cup squad this summer and is reportedly valued at around £15million.

Depay’s arrival would be bad news for the likes of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez, who will be hoping they have the chance to prove they should be starting more games up front for United next season and beyond.

And finally, former United great Peter Schmeichel has praised the club for finally appointing 62-year-old van Gaal.

In an interview with Sky Sports, the Danish star said, “I think van Gaal is the kind of guy who will instantly command the respect of the players.

“He has that kind of reputation and he is a guy who is very sure about himself.”
