Liverpool were strongly linked with the Ukrainian last winter, unable to get a deal done before the January deadline due to the sheer number of terms and conditions involved in the deal.
David Moyes may have gone, Ryan Giggs’ interim career as manager may be over and van Gaal has already reportedly told United to go after some big money deals this summer.
Where and United have a reported interest in Konoplyanka is confusing and easy to pick apart for a variety of reasons.
The most obvious one is the edge Liverpool have over United in terms of Champions League football.
Brendan Rodgers’ side finished second in the Premier League last season, which means they automatically qualify for the Champions League group stage and any player they sign this summer has the guaranteed chance to play in Europe’s premier club competition.
United don’t have any European football to offer signings next season and while they’re linked with some world class players, that will be a telling factor.
The reports which suggest United’s interest in those world class players are also interesting because they create the idea that if van Gaal wants a winger this summer, he’ll set his sights on someone with a higher profile than Konoplyanka.
United have a number of wide options in their current squad as well as predominantly central based players who have proven that they can play in wider areas on either side of the midfield.
Konoplyanka won’t want to commit to any move unless he’s going to be first choice and Liverpool have a clear position at left midfield with Victor Moses heading back to parent club Chelsea.
There’s no guarantee he will start for United considering the calibre of other players they have been linked with and the versatility of some their current midfield men.
Rubbish Rating: With United linked to players like Kroos, Fabregas, Mandzukic and more, it would be remarkable if van Gaal quickly decided that Konoplyanka is a player he needed.
