The front page of Catalan newspaper Sport has suggested Manchester United are ready to make a staggering offer to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.
New United boss Louis van Gaal has wasted no time commissioning the club to go after big transfers on his behalf and the paper suggests the Old Trafford team will make an offer in the region of €53 million (roughly £43 million) to sign the Spaniard.
When the Gunners originally sold Fabregas to Barcelona, they made sure a clause was inserted into the deal which stipulated should any side make a future offer for the midfielder, Barca had to let Arsenal know about it.
The Gunners would then have the chance to either match or better that offer as a sort of first refusal option should the Spanish giants ever thinking about selling the player they fought to get back from Arsenal.
Arsenal showed at the back end of last summer that they are not afraid to make big money offers and do large deals, with the £42.5 million acquisition of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid.
However, where United have an ace up their sleeve is in the respect of Arsenal’s squad.
Another central midfielder won’t be a priority for Wenger this summer, with the current side having several options across the middle of their team.
It would be extremely harsh on some like Aaron Ramsey, who had a superb season last year, to say ‘thanks, but no thanks’ dropping him to make room for Fabregas in the heart of the side.
United’s financial strength hasn’t been affected by the fact they’re out of Europe and finished seventh in the league last season and if Arsenal are interested, United have the ability to push that fee above the £50 million mark.
