Back in March, Manchester City midfielder Nasri claimed that his teammate Toure is the best midfielder in the world, and that he was not being given the due recognition because he is from Africa.
‘If he wasn’t African, everyone will say he’s the best midfielder in the world’, said the France international.
‘Of course it counts against him being from Ivory Coast’, added Nasri. ‘If he was Argentinean or Brazilian everyone will talk about him, everyone. You have some Brazilians or Argentineans, I don’t want to say anything wrong, but just because they are from this country you pay £40 million or £50m for them’.
The following month in an interview for Football Focus on BBC World News, Toure agreed with Nasri: ‘I think what Samir was saying was definitely true’.
The stats below from Toure’s 2013-14 campaign do show that he was in world-class form.
And now Chelsea striker Eto’o, who will officially leave the club next month, has backed the Ivory Coast international and has gone on to say that he is the best player in the world.
‘He is exceptional! Look at what he did with Manchester City’, the 33-year-old Cameroon international told CAF’s official website. ‘It is phenomenal. To me, there is no doubt that Yaya Toure is the best player in the world’.
Eto’o has also underlined the fact that 31-year-old Toure does not get the recognition that he deserves.
‘The goals he scores with his team are just incredible’, he said. ‘If these were done by Lionel Messi, it would have been said immediately that he is the best player on the planet’.
There can be no doubt that Toure is one of the best players in the world. He was already a class player before moving to City – a quick glance at his record at Barcelona would be enough to convince even the most stubborn of detractors. In the Premier League and especially this season, he has really taken it up a whole new level.
But is Toure the best player in the world? Of course, this is a subjective matter, but aren’t the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo still playing?
