A round up of news stories and transfer rumours about Liverpool from the past 24 hours.
Former Southampton chairman Nicola Cortese says Liverpool wouldn’t have a chance of signing Adam Lallana if he was still at the club. The Reds continue to be linked with a big money deal for the England international.
“My answer was that it was not going to happen for at least the next two seasons. The other chairmen respected that. Until the day I left, there were no offers,” he told the BBC.
Reports suggest that the Saints are unwilling to budge over their demanded fee for Lallana. Liverpool are thought to have made an initial £20 million offer, with the Saints holding out for closer to the £25 million mark.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that Ashley Cole is yet to decide over his future. He has revealed he will be leaving Chelsea but the report suggests he’s torn between his respect for Chelsea, which could force him to join a foreign side, or moving to one of the Blues’ Premier League rivals such as Liverpool.
Liverpool defender Daniel Agger continues to be linked with an exit from Anfield this summer. Agger has been critical of Brendan Rodgers in the recent past for the way the Reds boss used him last season. Agger has been linked with high profile moves to Barcelona in Spain and Napoli in Italy.
Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez could beat the Reds to the signing of Javier Mascherano at Serie A side Napoli. The Argentine has been tipped to leave Barcelona this summer and while a return to Anfield has been mentioned, Napoli are thought to be keen.
“Benitez would like Mascherano and he’s evaluating different options to try signing him,” said his agent Bernardo Bovarone.
Benitez is keen on a return to England and would jump at the chance according to Bolo Zenden, who has previously worked as his assistant.
“He loves the English game. He loves to manage his teams in England and it is just a sidestep to be back in Italy,” he told talkSPORT.
Italian site Corriere dello Sport claimed earlier today that Liverpool star Martin Skrtel had been pictured at Capodichino airport, sparking suggestions he was on his way to Naples to talk with Napoli. Perhaps, he was just off on holiday after a long hard season with the Merseyside club.
Liverpool’s arch rivals Manchester United have emerged as a surprise candidate to swoop for Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka. Brendan Rodgers has reportedly been interested in the wide player since last winter, but reports today have suggested United are interested in the Ukrainian.
