With or without Loic Remy next season, Newcastle United clearly need to strengthen their squad with some firepower.
Loic Remy had a great season for The Magpies and it would be scary to see where they would have ended up without the Frenchman's contributions.
When he was unavailable for selection, Newcastle suffered, and there was no one else in the side who could support Remy with a decent amount of goals. It looks unlikely that Remy will be returning to St James' Park with Arsenal reported to be interested in the Queens Park Rangers striker via numerous sources.
With Luuk De Jong failing to impress during his loan spell and the end of Shola Ameobi's contract, Alan Pardew could do with bringing in three strikers. Here are five players who The Magpies should be targeting.
Kostas Mitroglou - Fulham
Mitroglou arrived at Fulham for £12m from Olympiakos but Felix Magath failed to include him in the side's relegation run-in. Fulham broke their transfer record in the hope that Mitroglou could keep them up, but he never got the chance. A change of managers did not go in his favour and Magath deemed he wasn't ready for Premier League football but we will never know whether he was or not. His record in Greece should still be remembered though, and 14 goals in 12 league games this season is very impressive. Should be available for a knock-down fee.
Demba Ba - Chelsea
Demba Ba had an impressive run towards the end of the season for Chelsea scoring valuable goals against Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool. He showed that he is still a top striker although his chances were limited at Stamford Bridge and they are likely to bring in another striker this summer. Newcastle saw the best of Ba and the fans would love to see him back at St James' Park. Ba himself would find it hard to resist a move back as well.
Saido Berahino -West Bromwich Albion
One for the future perhaps at just 20-years old but Berahino showed last season that he can already make an impact at the top level. Saido scored eight goals last season including a memorable one at Manchester United and was even tipped for an England call-up at one point. There is uncertainty over the new manager at West Brom so now could be a good time for Newcastle to pounce. Would certainly be a worthwhile investment and Berahino could be tempted if he is guaranteed first team football.
Bafetimbi Gomis - Lyon
Gomis has been linked with Newcastle for many years now even when Kevin Keegan was in charge for the second time. This could finally be the year we see the Frenchman join The Magpies. He scored 14 goals in Ligue 1 this season as well as three in the Europa League. Newcastle know the French market well through Graham Carr and Gomis will feel welcomed by the numerous French players already there.
Charlie Austin - Queens Park Rangers
Charlie Austin has gone from strength to strength throughout his career and is continuing to improve. Could well be playing in the Premier League next season if QPR can come through their Championship play-off final match against Derby County on Saturday. However if not then Newcastle should pounce. 19 goals in 30 Championship starts this season gave QPR a chance of promotion, as without him they struggled for goals. Has been prolific at every club from Poole Town to Swindon to QPR.
