€30m Arsenal striker target Rodrigo poised to seal transfer to Valencia - report

Mestalla Valencia

Arsenal linked striker Rodrigo is set to be the first big name acquisition for Valencia since being taken over by Peter Lim.

Atletico Madrid's title win in Spain has demonstrated the Real-Barcelona duopoly can be broken in La Liga, and another team are planning their own challenge next season.

The last club previously to win the title other than the El Clasico rivals, Valencia, have this month seen a takeover completed by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim, after months of speculation.

And this season's eighth placed side are poised to make their first big splash in the transfer market, aiming to sign Benfica striker Rodrigo, a Spanish under-21 international.

Rodrigo has been previously linked with Arsenal, The Independent among those to claim in January he was on the Gunners' radar.

In the end Benfica's price tag proved prohibitive, and they did end up selling him, along with midfielder Andre Gomes to a third party investment fund for €45 million on deadline day.

Now Portuguese newspaper O Jogo report that Rodrigo at the end of is journey as a Valencia player, and will be sold imminently to Valencia for €30 million. Andre Gomes will not be purchased as part of the deal.

Rodrigo, 23, once played in the Premier League as a teenager on loan with Bolton, and struggled at times out on the wing but has since blossomed into an exciting striker.

A move back to his native Spain is a step forward in his career, and dealing with the pressure his price tag will bring will be a big challenge for him.

A former Real Madrid trainee, Rodrigo bagged 18 goals in 40 appearances for Benfica this season, including scoring against Tottenham in the Europa League.

It's another potential striker for Arsenal to cross off their list, but for the price Valencia are quoted to be paying, Arsenal may well feel they would be able to buy a more proven striker for the money.
