Liverpool transfer target Yevhen Konoplyanka is a surprise transfer target for Manchester United, the Mirror are reporting.
"Deposed champions United have had him watched several times, the latest being in a League win on Sunday. It is understood the club are now waiting for new boss Van Gaal to confirm he wants the player."
We had published an article less than 24 hours earlier asking if Liverpool's failure to act so far regarding the Ukrainian could see them beaten out by other clubs, but did not anticipate interest from United.
Here are three questions regarding the Red Devils' potential bid:
Will United's interest now force Liverpool's hand?
If Liverpool still retain interest in the Dnipro winger, now will be the time to act upon it. Having been beaten to the punch on deals for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mohamed Salah, the Reds will not want to see another high profile target swiped away from them. With United likely to be a direct competitor for Premier League positions next season, Old Trafford is the last destination Liverpool would choose for Konoplyanka if not Anfield.
Would Konoplyanka spell the end for Ashley Young?
The exciting winger will be able to provide United with a greater threat out wide than they have shown over the past two seasons. And his arrival could spell the end for under-performing winger Ashley Young, who has lost his place in the England squad due to his poor campaign for United. Young won't be the only one facing the axe, with fellow winger Nani also at risk.
Will Champions League football be a factor?
United will hope their reputation and that of Louis van Gaal will compensate for a lack of Premier League football, but will Konoplyanka buy in? The winger played in the Europa League for Dnipro last season, but this season has helped them qualify for the Champions League. Walking away from that for Liverpool, also in the competition, won't faze him, but will he happily give it up for a lack of European football altogether at United?
