United morning news: Four stars named in possible £200m spending spree; ex-player hails boss

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Having finally been announced as the new permanent manager of Manchester United, Louis van Gaal’s task prior to the new campaign is to ensure he has the players to reclaim the Premier League title.

As a result, a busy summer transfer window is surely just around the corner for the Old Trafford club – and a window that will bear little resemblance to last year’s less than successful few months.

The Express reports that van Gaal has been handed a £200million kitty as he looks to replace defensive stalwarts and reinvigorate the midfield.

It will be no surprise the players on his reported wish-list, but it will take an almighty effort to bring two – let alone all of them – to United.

Mats Hummels and Luke Shaw are being talked of to improve the defence, while Toni Kroos and Marco Reus are the players linked with transforming the side further up the pitch. That said, a new defensive midfielder – ideally William Carvalho – is also a necessity given the players currently at the club.

In other news, Owen Hargreaves has told BT Sport that van Gaal and Ryan Giggs could be the perfect combination in the Old Trafford dug-out.

The former England international also believes van Gaal can bring the title back to United in his first season…if he spends well.

“If they can get the players necessary I don’t doubt that van Gaal could even lead them to the title,” Hargreaves said. “But they need to have a great summer.”
