Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone believes loanee Thibaut Courtois is destined to be amongst the best goalkeepers in the world.
Following Atletico Madrid’s 1-1 draw at Barcelona, Belgian shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois was crowned a La Liga champion in arguably his last Spanish top-flight match.
The 6ft 6inch goalkeeper has spent the past three seasons on loan in the Spanish capital, winning multiple trophies and becoming one of the most recognisable young players in the game.
This season, the 22-year-old has frequently wowed the Spanish public by displaying a number of phenomenal performances, keeping a total of 20 clean sheets on the award to winning his second consecutive Zamora trophy, an award given to La Liga’s goalkeeper of the year.
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has been at the heart of Courtois’ development over the past few years, and the Argentine coach highlighted the Chelsea loanee’s commitment and maturity as traits which will see him become one of the best players in the world.
“He [Courtois] has developed so much, he along with the rest of the team. When the team is functioning well the individual characteristics of the players stand out. He keeps on growing, and what I like best is his commitment. He is very mature and he is destined to be amongst the best goalkeepers in the world.” He said, quoted by Spanish newspaper AS.
Courtois’ adventure in Spain appears to be drawing to an end and this Saturday’s Champions League final against Real Madrid could be his last game before returning to Stamford Bridge on a permanent basis.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has acknowledged the former Genk star’s talent, and the self-proclaimed Special One has hinted that Courtois has a part to play at the Blues next season as the club continues to build towards its next generation of sustained success.
