Long linked with a possible move to Manchester United, Ezequiel Garay could instead be on his way to Spanish side Valencia according to reports.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola has picked up on a report from Spanish daily Superdeporte claiming the Benfica defender will move to the La Liga side this summer, most likely to follow in the footsteps of his current teammates Rodrigo and Andre Gomes.
That pair’s economic rights were purchased by Peter Lim’s Meriton Capital Limited in January, and now the Singapore businessman has been announced as the new owner of Valencia.
Garay was thought to be on the verge of a move to Old Trafford last summer, only for that to fail to materialise. He was then strongly linked with a switch to Zenit St Petersburg during the winter, but reportedly refused the move with United still a possibility.
With both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leaving Louis van Gaal’s side this summer, the Dutchman will need to bring in defensive reinforcements. But the links to Garay have gone quiet in recent months, with the likes of Mats Hummels and Bruno Martins Indi now tipped to join van Gaal at United.
Valencia look set to bring in a number of new players during the close-season, and that perennial rumour mill darling Garay may just be one of them.
The latest report claims that while a transfer fee has not been revealed, it should not be an issue and Garay looks set to become part of the Spanish side’s new dawn.
But if van Gaal is unable to tempt the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Feyenoord into doing business, expect the Garay rumours to rumble into view once more, especially as long as he remains a Benfica player.
