Close followers of Spanish football would have known how good Ivan Rakitic is for years, but this season the Sevilla midfielder has really caught the attention of everyone in Europe.
The Croatia international, who can play both in central and in attacking midfield, has been one of the best players in La Liga this campaign. Rakitic’s 12 goals and 10 assists in 34 league appearances is complemented by his three goals and as many assists in the Europa League – a competition that Sevilla won by defeating Benfica on penalties in the final earlier this month.
Rakitic’s quicksilver intelligence and passing range have seen him linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, as the Red Devils are in dire need of some creativity in the middle of the park. And suggestions that he has outgrown Sevilla and is set for a switch to one of Europe’s biggest clubs are only going to grow following his inclusion in LFP’s La Liga Team of the Season.
LFP’s official website justified his inclusion in the team by describing the 26-year-old as “the heartbeat of a Sevilla who have returned to their throne after winning their third UEFA Europa League”. It was mainly because of Rakitic that the Andalucian club finished as high as fifth in La Liga.
Rakitic’s inclusion in the team becomes even more impressive when you consider that Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Real Madrid duo Gareth Bale and Luka Modric – bigger names than the former Schalke man – all failed to make it to the LFP XI.
Sevilla sporting director Ramon Rodriguez has claimed that Rakitic is going to sign a new contract and will stay with the club beyond the summer. The fans would hope that all that is sorted in the coming days, as United reportedly continue to monitor developments in Seville.
