Manchester United have finally confirmed the summer’s worst kept secret so far; Louis van Gaal will be the club’s new manager, on a three-year contract.
The Dutchman was confirmed into his new position yesterday, but his representatives were very quick to stress that he wouldn’t be leaving his duties with the Netherlands in any capacity until after the World Cup.
Van Gaal has been extremely respectful towards his current employers, fending off questions over the last couple of weeks over his role at United while he’s been preparing the Dutch national side for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Now that he’s been confirmed as United’s new boss, United fans can start to get a bit excited about the prospect of what will happen to their club this summer, after the tournament has finished and van Gaal heads to England to take up his post.
Several reports within the British press have suggested that he’s already indicated to the club who he wants them to try and buy this summer, with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward reportedly working away on several top transfer deals.
It was a disappointing campaign for United last season and the decision to sack David Moyes just before the end of the campaign wouldn’t have come as a surprise to many who watched United last year.
The new boss will have a lot of work to do in terms of taking the side on, improving it and getting it into a position where it’s ready to fly out of the traps when the Premier League gets under way.
What van Gaal has going for him is the financial strength United possess off the field through their global commercial network and the fact United will be playing fewer games next season.
No European football means United will benefit as Liverpool did last season, having full weeks of rest between domestic matches which will also allow van Gaal to work on the weaknesses of some key players.
Here’s what United fans have had to say about their new manager.
Moyes: We aspire to be like City LvG: MUFC r biggest club in world. They've big ambitions, I've big ambitions. Together we'll make history— KING CANTONAAAA (@Hassan_MUFC) May 19, 2014
It's said some Utd players didn't try too hard because they didn't like Moyes' methods. Better not able take the piss out of LVG #MUFC— Duncan Wright (@dwright75) May 19, 2014
LVG at MUFC. Excellent appointment. Keeping Ryan Giggs on too. The correct decision. Good luck Giggsy #MUFC— Jason Mohammad (@jasonmbbc) May 19, 2014
There is nothing wrong with arrogance when you can back it up and #vangaal has done that to throughout his career . about time we had it— Thomas Nolan (@Scouserhater) May 19, 2014
"This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history”…never catch Moyes saying that #VanGaal— Tobiias (@TobiiasGaming) May 19, 2014
Can LVG get the most put of Nani? Biggest frustration in the squad. So much potential so far unrealised.— Van's Da Man (@Manutdsince1982) May 20, 2014
Nice to see we've got LVG in place officially now with Giggs as assistant. We should have an exciting summer ahead with player arrivals too.— Busby MUFC (@BusbyMUFC) May 19, 2014
