Yaya Toure has made plenty of headlines in the last few hours, after his agent claimed a birthday “snub” had left the Manchester City player questioning his future at the club.
Toure would later tweet that the comments from his representative, Dimitri Seluk, were true, and that he would give an interview after the World Cup to explain.
But the Ivory Coast international gave an interview with beIN SPORTS on Monday, in which he hinted at what was to come the following day.
Asked if he could be playing for another club next season, Toure is quoted as saying, “Yeah, I think we never know in football, we never know.
“I think because many people, the newspapers and myself think I have had a brilliant season this year, because of that everything is open now…and I think from my point of view I just focus on the World Cup.”
On his agent Seluk, Toure reportedly said, “My agent Dimitri is always on the phone and he knows what he has to do because I trust him a lot.”
Toure went on to say that things would become clearer after the World Cup. But for City and their fans that is a long wait before they find out the intentions of arguably their most important player.
Toure has netted 24 times this season and provided 12 assists. He is also a midfield powerhouse who would effortlessly slot into most teams in the world.
It is true that he has enjoyed a campaign to remember, but would he really jump ship just one year into a new four-year contract?
From the goings on of the last 24 hours, it suddenly seems that is a very distinct possibility. But if that is the case, Toure would be fair to reveal his hand far sooner than after a summer of international competition.
