Comments he made in the Danish media appear to show him a little disgruntled with life at Liverpool in the past season, as he didn't feature in the starting line-up as much as he may have liked.
Daniel Agger appears to have cast doubt on his future at Liverpool after saying he’s 'nobody’s third choice'.
The Reds vice-captain also didn’t seem particularly happy over being left out of key clashes against Manchester City and Chelsea towards the end of last season.
Agger failed to hold down a regular starting place at the heart of defence during the campaign as Mamadou Sakho was given the opportunity whenever the Dane faced an injury problem, and if the team won then Brendan Rodgers was reluctant to change things.
The Dane was quoted in several media outlets, having spoken to the media in Denmark.
When asked if he’ll be at the club next season, he said: “I don’t know. That’s up to the manager. I can’t go and put myself on the team sheet.
“It definitely wasn’t great (to be left out of the games against Chelsea and Manchester City), but I don’t make the decisions.
“I think it is because the manager doesn’t think that I’m good enough.”
Prior to these comments it did seem that Agger’s future was one that was under the microscope given the amount of money spent on Mamadou Sakho at the start of last season.
Agger has also attracted interest from elsewhere previously with Barcelona and Manchester City both said to have made enquiries about him in the past.
These comments will only fuel speculation over the summer and Brendan Rodgers will no doubt like to seek clarity from his vice-captain over any issues he may have. He'll also want to know whether the Dane wants to leave the club this summer so he can bring in reinforcements as Liverpool prepare for their first season back in the Champions League since 2009.
There are young defenders waiting in the wings at Liverpool who will add to competition next season and could be asked to step up alongside any new signings that arrive. Tiago Ilori may spend more time on loan but Andre Wisdom is likely to return from his loan spell at Derby County, whilst the Reds boss has already signalled his intention to give more opportunities to Martin Kelly next season.
But the comments from Agger could signal the beginning of the end for him at Liverpool as Rodgers will be on the lookout for defensive reinforcements as he tries to improve a back line that leaked 50 goals last season. Any money from a potential sale of Agger could be used to the fund the deal.
