Ashley Cole is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer, and wrote a series of tweets late on Monday evening which seemed to signal the death knell for his time with the Blues.
"I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent and sadly it does not look like Chelsea will be one of them," he tweeted.
"And now I'll be looking for another journey in my life hope it can be like my others full of fun and of course WIN something."
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Kevin Phillips, who had spells in England's top division with a slew of clubs which included Sunderland, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion, believes that the former England international is still one of the finest left-backs around.
He said: “Ashley Cole could walk into any team in the Premier League and don’t be surprised if he was to pitch up at Manchester United. Why not?
"He’s got another two or three seasons [left in him]. He’s only signed a three-year deal [Louis] van Gaal, and he’s promising all sorts and what better player than Ashley Cole to fit straight in there.
"For me he’s been the left-back in the Premier League, especially since I’ve been watching it. Any top-four team [would take him]. Manchester United have been mentioned already with Van Gaal coming in, will he make a little sneaky offer to him?
"He has not played much football recently, but you’ve seen him in the last few weeks, particularly against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, he was outstanding."
Cole recently retired from international football after being overlooked by Roy Hodgson in favour of Leighton Baines and Luke Shaw for his 23-man World Cup squad.
Meanwhile, Liverpool and Real Madrid are reportedly monitoring the 33-year-old's situation at Stamford Bridge, and Cole is expected to announce his future plans when he returns from holiday.
With Patrice Evra tipped to leave Old Trafford this summer, and no deal for Luke Shaw yet announced, could United spring a surprise and move for Cole prior to the new campaign?
