Arsenal have spent time watching French side Toulouse this season, and if they have done their homework, they should be looking closely at this forward.
Arsenal for weeks, even months, have been linked with a move for Toulouse defender Serge Aurier. With Bacary Sagna set to leave this summer, there is little doubt that Aurier would be an excellent replacement. However, if Arsenal have been scouting the Ivorian defender, they may have been paying too much attention on the wrong player at Toulouse. An end of season hat-trick for Wissam Ben Yedder took his tally to 16 for the season, and if Arsene Wenger is looking for a forward, the 23-year-old would be perfect for the London club.
Ben Yedder made 35 starts for Toulouse this season, and although it has been a season full of inconsistencies for Le Téfécé, the former France Under-21 international has been every impressive. His partnership with Danish forward Martin Braithwaite has been one of the best forward lines outside the top two, and the impressive play of Toulouse’s little firecracker of a forward has been sensational.
35% - S.Kalou and W.Ben Yedder have both scored 35% of their team’s goals (16/46), best ratios in Ligue 1 2013/14. Bosses.— OptaJean (@OptaJean) May 18, 2014
His last day hat-trick was his second of the season, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic managed the same feat this season and it will do nothing but to raise the profile of Ben Yedder. Although he is small in height, he is good in the air and has a strong upper-body. His skill on the ball is superb, and helps him beat defenders and make space in the tightest of defences.
As the above goal shows, the forward has great feet in tight areas and the balance and control to beat players in the final third and he then has the instincts to provide the finish. Ben Yedder has pace to hit on the break, skill to receive the ball into feet, and the predatory instincts to play as a centre-forward.
Arsenal fans may not think Olivier Giroud is the man to lead the line at the Emirates, but with Ben Yedder beside him, the link-up play would be phenomenal. He is also very versatile and can play in the wide roles. It may be Aurier that has grabbed Arsenal’s attention, but it should be Ben Yedder that Wenger puts top of the shopping list.
