As talented a player as Remy Cabella is, he is not the answer to Newcastle's problems. Here is the midfield option from Ligue 1 that they should sign.
The rumours that Newcastle United have made an offer for Montpellier’s Remy Cabella are catching steam, but if the agreed bid is around €8 million then NUFC will have to go higher if they want any chance of securing the talented playmaker. With interest from Atletico Madrid, Marseille and Borussia Dortmund also reported, anything less than €14 million and Alan Pardew’s side may as well not bother.
Ligue 1 is a regular hunting ground for Pardew and Chief Scout Graham Carr and there is no doubt they will have other names on their list if the deal doesn’t go through. When the interest was first reported it was said that Cabella was wanted as the replacement for Yohan Cabaye. The talented Frenchman has since left for Paris Saint-Germain, but Newcastle never replaced him, much to the discontent of the fans.
If Pardew is looking for someone to replace Cabaye long-term, then Bordeaux’s excellent young central midfielder, Gregory Sertic, could be a fantastic option this summer. The 24-year-old made 29 starts for Les Girondins this season and has been their one true beacon of light in what was a very mediocre season. He can play anywhere in the centre of the park, from centre-back to attacking-midfield, but is best at central-midfield where he can dictate the game and be an influence in both attack and defence.
7 - Grégory Sertic has delivered 7 assists in Ligue 1 in 2014, more than any other player. Generous.— OptaJean (@OptaJean) May 17, 2014
Sertic is an excellent passer of the ball, finishing finished fourth this season in assists with 10, just behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic, James Rodriguez and Lucas Moura. He also scored three goals, making it his most productive season to date. Like Cabaye, he loves a shot from distance, but can also display his excellent passing range, he usually makes the right decisions on the pitch and rarely gives the ball away needlessly.
In 2013 he signed a new contract with Bordeaux which runs till 2017, but it is likely that Bordeaux would do a deal with the €8 million Newcastle is offering Montpellier. As good a player as Remy Cabella is, it is unlikely that he would instantly adapt to the style of Newcastle United and the physical play of the Premier League. Sertic would be able to deal with the physical side better, and would be an excellent fit within Pardew’s midfield.
Sertic has been one of the unsung heroes of Ligue 1 this season, he is still playing under the radar, this would be the perfect timing for Newcastle United to make an offer and properly replace a former fan-favourite.
