YouTube reported to be buying Twitch in $1 billion cash pay out

The Google owned video sharing site now wants your gaming streams.

A report in Variety claims that Youtube will be making a $1 billion cash offer for Twitch the popular game video streaming company in an acquisition that "would be the most significant in the history of YouTube."

Twitch allows for gamers to broadcast videos of their gaming activities across the internet and has enjoyed considerable success leading up to the news of the buy-out. Both Sony and Microsoft have been working to integrate Twitch streaming and viewing with their latest consoles. Xbox One and PS4 have seen high numbers of games streams coming to Twitch following their respective launches last year.

Reporting in May last year Twitch boasted 34 million unique monthly viewers and in March this year let on that the total downstream bandwidth used by Twitch had tripled since Autumn 2013.

Alongside the console giants Twitch has been making partnerships with big games studios, amongst them EA, Activision and SoE.

The report as yet haven’t been officially confirmed but an imminent announcement is expected.
