World Cup 2014: Five Group B transfer targets for Liverpool - featuring former Rodgers signing

Michel Vorm

The World Cup is not only football's biggest tournament, but it also serves as a shop window for players to impress onlooking clubs.

Liverpool's title challenge ultimately fell short as Manchester City stole in to take the crown in the final week of the season. Regardless of that late disappointment, Champions League football is finally returning to Anfield, and manager Brendan Rodgers will need to strengthen his squad if Liverpool are to compete domestically and in Europe.

There is bound to be a large transfer kitty at Rodgers' disposal this summer, and with the World Cup on the horizon, there will be a number of players catching his eye. Here are five players who will be playing in Group B that could be on Rodgers' radar this summer...

Alberto Moreno, Spain

The injury to Jose Enrique exposed Liverpool's lack of depth at left back, and the former Newcastle man could be upgraded upon anyway. His compatriot Moreno could be a viable replacement, after the 21-year-old impressed with Sevilla this season. He isn't guaranteed to be on the plane just yet but should be taken as a backup to Jordi Alba, and with few chances to impress, he will have to prove to Rodgers what he can do against the best.

Javi Martinez, Spain

The former Athletic Bilbao midfielder starred for Bayern Munich last season, but rumours suggest that he could leave the Allianz Arena this summer. The 25-year-old has now slipped behind Toni Kroos in the pecking order under Pep Guardiola, and that has alerted Liverpool to the prospect of bringing him to Merseyside. The Spanish international may be pricey, but would add more athleticism to the Reds' midfield, with Steven Gerrard's career coming towards the end.

Michael Vorm, Holland

Reds stopper Simon Mignolet had a decent debut season at Anfield but did struggle at times to command his area, whilst he was also guilty of committing some crucial errors too. This has led Rodgers to reportedly seek competition for the Belgian international, and one of the suggested names is his former Swansea City goalkeeper Michel Vorm. He is vying with Ajax's Jasper Cillessen for the starting spot in Louis van Gaal's side, and could prove he is worth more than the suggested £5m in the process.

Stefan de Vrij, Holland

Ultimately, Liverpool's fragile defence cost them the title over the course of the season, and Rodgers must look to bring in upgrades this summer. Daniel Agger could leave the club and one of the hot names linked with a move to Anfield is Feyenoord's de Vrij. Just 22, the centre back has been outstanding for Ronald Koeman's side this season and looks set to start for Holland if van Gaal chooses to play three at the back at the World Cup - where his value could soar.

Alexis Sanchez, Chile

It's no secret that Rodgers has been looking to bring in a winger over the past year. The likes of Willian, Mohamed Salah and Yevhen Konoplyanka have all been targets, but Liverpool failed to land any of them. This time, Rodgers could target an even bigger name in Barcelona's Sanchez, who has been tipped to leave the club as the La Liga giants look to rebuild this summer. With pace and goalscoring prowess, the 25-year-old would make Liverpool's already potent attack even more deadly.
