World Cup 2014: Five Group B transfer targets for Arsenal – ex-captain features

Alexis Sanchez Chile

The World Cup is not only football's biggest tournament, but it also serves as a shop window for players to impress onlooking clubs.

Arsenal are entering a critical transfer window, with the pressure building on manager Arsene Wenger. The Gunners secured their first trophy in nine years with a win over Hull City in the FA Cup final, but fans are hoping for a sustained title bid next season.

Their title bid fell apart in the second half of the campaign, and with plenty of areas of concern in the side, Wenger should be busy this summer. There's just the small matter of the World Cup to consider, and as we all know, players that impress on the world's biggest stage attract interest, so who could Wenger target from Group B?

Cesc Fabregas, Spain

A familiar face to Arsenal fans, midfielder Fabregas was a star in North London after arriving from Barcelona in 2003, and went on to make over 300 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 57 goals and racking up 98 assists. In 2011, he made an emotional return to his boyhood club as Barcelona swooped to take him back to Catalunya, but he's failed to hit the heights of his Arsenal days. Rumours suggest that the 27-year-old will be sold as part of Barca's rebuilding process this summer, and a return to Arsenal could be beneficial for all parties.

Daryl Janmaat, Holland

With Bacary Sagna set to leave the club on a free transfer this summer, it's well known that Arsenal have been looking to bring in a replacement at right back. Serge Aurier has been strongly linked but another name in the frame could be Feyenoord's Janmaat. The 24-year-old has been a star for Ronald Koeman's men and is virtually guaranteed of a starting spot in Louis van Gaal's starting XI this summer, where he can make himself a household name.

Memphis Depay, Holland

The Gunners regularly struggled to break down teams this season because of a lack of pace in their side, particularly after Theo Walcott injured his knee in January. Adding more speed has to be a priority for Wenger and with his penchant for signing young talents with potential, Depay could well be on his radar. The 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven winger is something of a wild card in the Dutch squad but having been linked with Arsenal in January, he's tipped for the top.

Mauricio Isla, Chile

As mentioned earlier, Arsenal are in need of a right back with Sagna poised to leave the club. There are a number of possibilities, but Juventus' Isla has the chance to put himself in the shop window at the World Cup after limited chances in Turin. A hard working player who made his name with Udinese, Isla is still only 25 and will be desperate to show what he can do this summer - and he may just catch Wenger's eye.

Alexis Sanchez, Chile

With pace needed up front, a move for Barcelona's Sanchez would be a big statement of intent for Wenger, just a year after grabbing Mesut Ozil. Sanchez is another Barca player who has been tipped to leave the club this summer as they look to rebuild. With 19 goals and 11 assists this season, the 25-year-old forward would be an outstanding addition to Arsenal's frontline as the Gunners look to give Olivier Giroud more support in attack.
