Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs finally called time on his illustrious playing career on Monday, 23 years after it began.
That is a remarkable achievement, to think the sprightly teenager who ran out for his debut against Everton in 1991 would rack up another 962 appearances for the club.
But Giggs was the epitome of a one-club man and an example to all when it comes to prolonging your career in a sport that is dominated by far younger players.
In the end, the Welshman may not have been the lightening-quick winger with the spaghetti legs, tying opponents in knots and beating them with that famous drop of the shoulder, but there were still moments, glimpses of the player he once was.
Now a more composed central midfield presence, with an outstanding eye for a pass, Giggs still chose his moments to run at the opposition - his speed no longer constant but always a possibility.
But now he has hung up his boots to focus on his new role as Louis van Gaal's assistant manager, wondering no doubt what the future will hold when the Dutchman ultimately leaves his post.
Could the former interim boss take to the hot-seat again three years down the line, this time without that prefix? He will certainly learn a lot from the Dutch master, and coupled with his lessons during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure, Giggs may be just about the most prepared young manager in the history of the game.
But for now he will be van Gaal's deputy, as United look to begin a new dawn at a club that took an alarming but not irreparable dip in form this season.
Following his retirement, we took to Twitter to gauge the reaction of the fans, and they were effusive in their praise. As you would expect. Because it is not every day that a true legend of the game bids it farewell.
