Arsenal may be glad they did not spend big on the following trio...
Not all players can be fortunate to land their dream move to Arsenal, no matter how hard they or their agents attempt to make it happen.
Last summer saw numerous Frenchman linked with switches across the channel, only to remain in Ligue 1 instead,
Three of those have come in for particular criticism this week, named in French newspaper L'Equipe's 'Flops of the Season'.
Imbula played for promoted Guingamp in 2012/13, and was linked with a switch to the Premier League. Touted as the 'next Vieira', Chelsea and Arsenal were credited with interest, only for the youngster to sign for Marseille for £8 million instead. Imbula played against Arsenal in the Champions League this season but failed to make an impression. After beginning the season in the side, Imbula ended it making just one start from March onwards, making 12 in Ligue 1 across the season in total.
Gourcuff is a player who has even himself attempted to link himself to Arsenal. A creative player once compared to Zinedine Zidane in his youth, he will likely never achieve even a fraction of that potential. That boils down to one key factor for the ex-Milan man, injuries. L'Equipe note that when he played, he did quite well, three goals and five assists, but spent too much time in the treatment room, only able to make 13 starts for Lyon in the division, and didn't complete 90 minutes in any Ligue 1 game after January.
Payet's eight goals and six assists in 30 starts do not sound too bad in isolation, but his general performances were not greatly impressive for a player from who so much more was expected. Last season's summer signing for Marseille was described by L'Equipe as 'very irregular', only playing well in flashes and failed to link up effectively with teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
