We take a look at three bargain buys Arsenal could make this summer ahead of another title challenge next season.
Arsenal claimed their first trophy in nine years at the weekend and now will undoubtedly have the taste for more silverware next season.
Arsene Wenger said before the highly-anticipated cup final against Hull City that he wants to win the Premier League and Champions League before he retires.
Although we expect Arsenal to spend in the summer, in order to compete with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and perhaps a rejuvenated Manchester United, we take a look at three players that could improve their side significantly without breaking the bank this summer.
1) Sokratis - Borussia Dortmund
The 25-year-old Greek defender has been in brilliant form this season, appearing in 47 matches for Dortmund in all competitions. The former Werder Breman defender even did enough to earn himself a place in the Bundesliga fans Team of the Year, despite a lowly reputation in comparison with his competitors.
The description given to the Dortmund star defender in the Team of the Season review was: 'The definition of defense falls on him. The Greek stopper took advantage of the opportunities given to him by the absense of Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels. Stable, with leadership characteristics and tendency to win the ball without making easily a mistake.'
The pacy, physical and athletic defender will have definitely have risen in value since his €9 million last summer; however, he could still represent a bargain given Dortmund's history of reasonable sell-on values.
Florian Thauvin - Marseille
The 21-year-old is a player Arsene Wenger has previous admitted to scouting in the past, and went on to compliment him prior to their Champions League clash earlier in the season. An eccentric midfielder is a classic case of a 'bums off seats player'. He will excite fans with his abrasive and raw attacking qualities, although at this current point in his development, he can be equally frustrating. Neverthless, the talented French midfielder has scored 11 and created 6 goals in his first season at Marseille, despite them having a relatively miserable season which saw them finish 6th.
He could be a huge asset for Arsenal, he has all the ability in the world. However, he is undoubtedly a player that needs concise and clear coaching, but his admission from the French squad could prompt him to move.
Kevin Volland - Hoffenheim
21-year-old German international Kevin Volland will be one of the exciting youngsters to watch at the World Cup after somewhat crashing the World Cup squad party last minute. The highly-touted forward showed immense promise last season and in truth the statistics don't do him justice. He scored nine goals last season contributing a further eigjt assists which, whilst okay, doesn't reflect the ability he shows on the pitch.
Whether or not he could be a potential bargain for Arsenal this summer very much depends on his World Cup campaign. If he is to have a flying campaign starting in the Germany XI every game, then it is quite possible his value will either double or treble. Nevertheless, he certainly is a player Arsenal should look out for this summer.
