Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala has been heavily linked with a move to England for the last six months, with a host of sides said to be interested in the centre-half.
The France international has confirmed that negotiations with Manchester City occurred in January, while he has also been linked with Manchester United in the past.
However, Mangala has stated that given a choice he would prefer to sign for Chelsea.
“In January, there were discussions with City, but it fell through because the two clubs could not reach an agreement. (Choosing between) City or Chelsea? Chelsea because it is London.
“My goal now is the World Cup. We will see what happens after that. I told (my agent) Jorge Mendes that I don’t want to know anything about the transfer window until then.”
But, with every chance that City and Chelsea could move for Mangala this summer, would he be making the right choice by going to Stamford Bridge?
City are widely expected to sign a new central defender this summer in an attempt to finally find a long-term partner for Vincent Kompany.
Mangala has all the abilities to be that man, and would surely command a place in the English champions’ starting XI more often than not.
If he opted to move to Chelsea however, competition for places would mean that the Porto man would not be guaranteed a place.
With John Terry seemingly set to stay at the club for another year and the presence of Kurt Zouma, David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Tomas Kalas, Mangala would face a battle to get regular game time at Jose Mourinho’s men.
With ambitions of starring for club and country for years to come, it may well be that Mangala would be better to opt for City this summer than a move to Chelsea.
