Would Bacary Sagna be any better than Pablo Zabaleta for Manchester City?

Bacary Sagna could be set to become Manchester City's first signing of the summer but is he an improvement on Pablo Zabaleta?

The situation regarding Bacary Sagna's contract at Arsenal has been going on all season, and with the Frenchman now certainly set to leave The Gunners, Manchester City are in pole position to sign the right-back.

Bacary rejected Arsenal's latest contract offer of £80,000 a week and reportedly told his teammates at Arsenal that he would be departing to join the Premier League champions.

Sagna is thought to be meeting Manchester City officials today and The Daily Mail believe that he will be offered a three-year deal worth an incredible £150,000 a week. A huge offer for a 31-year-old and also when you consider that they already have a superb right-back in Pablo Zabaleta.

The offer may have been increased to stop a move from Manchester United as Louis Van Gaal was thought to be keen on adding him to the United squad.

Micah Richards is set to leave this summer following very limited playing time in the last few seasons, so could we be set to see Zabaleta move into that role now? He certainly doesn't deserve it and is adored by the City fans. There was very little rotation with the City defence last season apart so we shouldn't expect there to be much in the coming season.

A £150,000 wage would certainly suggest that Sagna will be a prominent member of the starting eleven, but he may be incorporated in another role as opposed to right-back. He has previously played in a central position for Arsenal before and City are in great need of strengthening that area.

Zabaleta and Sagna have arguably been the two best and most consistent right-backs in the last five years of the Premier League. Zabaleta has played 233 games for City since joining in 2008 and has been a great servant for the club.

Although Sagna has played at centre-back he is only 5 ft 9 in, which could hinder him. A more likely option for the centre-back role would be Eliaquim Mangala of FC Porto who has been linked with the club since January.

Pablo Zabaleta 35 15 0 92 70 1,383 3,079

The stats show that both players had 15 clean sheets from their 35 games this season and neither made an error leading to a goal. Zabaleta made much more tackles and interceptions than Sagna although the Frenchman did make more accurate passes.

Either way they are both great players but it would be incredibly unfair if Zabaleta lost his place in the Manchester City side.
