Manchester United have confirmed Louis van Gaal as the new manager at Old Trafford.

The 62-year-old Netherlands coach will take charge of the Red Devils after the World Cup in Brazil this summer. He signed a three-year contract to take charge of the position departed by David Moyes who was sacked in April after just 11 months in charge.

"This club has big ambitions. I too have big ambitions," he said. "Together I'm sure we will make history."

"To work as a manager for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world, makes me very proud.”

"I have managed in games at Old Trafford before and know what an incredible arena Old Trafford is and how passionate and knowledgeable the fans are," he added.

Interim manager and Red Devils’ legend Ryan Giggs has been confirmed as assistant manager.

The 40-year-old Welsh ace has announced his retirement as a player for United after playing his entire career as a player for Manchester United.

"Today is a new chapter filled with many emotions - immense pride, sadness, but most of all, excitement," Giggs said.

"I am immensely proud, honoured and fortunate to have represented the biggest club in the world 963 times and Wales 64 times.”

"United fans, I hope, will share and echo my belief that the club, the management and owners, are doing everything they can to return this great club to where it belongs. I hope to be there every step of the way," he added.

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal ‘hinted’ Robin van Persie could be captain at Old Trafford under his reign after the striker took the armband for his country on Saturday.

“I was happy with his performance, but he is also a fantastic captain — and that is important, too,” said Van Gaal. “I think you always make a player captain when you have the same morals and philosophy as they do.”

In transfer news, United have been told Cesc Fabregas will cost them £45 million by Barcelona who are reportedly willing to sell the former Arsenal captain this summer.

The Spain international was a top target of David Moyes’ last summer but the club failed to bring him to Old Trafford but this summer the Red Devils could get their man, if Arsenal choose not to trigger their buyback option for their former skipper.

Elsewhere, United are linked with Dutch youngster Jordy Clasie. The arrival of Louis van Gaal could see United target the Feyenoord playmaker who is highly regarded as ‘world class’ by national teammate Robin van Persie.

United remain linked with Germany star Toni Kroos who could be on his way to join the Red Devils from Bayern Munich after Louis van Gaal gave the ‘green light’ for his transfer, according to reports.

Finally, United have signed Serbia youth goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic on Sunday. The 17-year-old has made six appearances for his country in the UEFA U17 Championship qualifiers this season.
