Stoke hopeful of making deal for Liverpool winger permanent

Mark Hughes Press Conference Disappointed 12/02/2014

Oussama Assaidi has spent the season on loan at the Britannia Stadium.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is hoping that Liverpool’s preparation for participation in next season’s Champions League can help them land Oussama Assaidi.

The Morrocan has been on loan at the Potters for the season and has impressed during his time at the Britannia Stadium.

Assaidi signed for Liverpool from Heerenveen for £2.7m in the summer of 2012 but didn’t see much first team action last season.

He made a total of 13 appearances and only four of those were in the Premier League.

This season at Stoke City he has made a total of 19 appearances in the Premier League alone, and has scored four goals for the Potters during that time.

Stoke boss Hughes is quoted in the Stoke Sentinel, saying: “The ball is very much Liverpool’s court because he is their player, and I’m not saying I know what they are thinking.

“But I would imagine that being in the champions league they will spend more money this summer and that could go against Ossie having a place there.

“It’s fair to say that he’s enjoyed his time with us and we have enjoyed having him here.”

It is hard to see Assaidi having much of a future at Anfield, especially with an impressive season from Raheem Sterling along with the emergence of Jordon Ibe who can both occupy a wide position – and are rated highly by Brendan Rodgers.

Hughes is right to point out that if Liverpool do sell then the money will be used towards trying to bring in reinforcements as the Reds return to the Champions League action for the first time since 2009.
