Arsenal latest: Time to replace Wenger with ‘best coach in Europe’ says ex-Gunner

Arsene Wenger Looks On

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Emirates Stadium…

ESPN reports that Arsene Wenger is on the verge of signing a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.

They also claim – not surprisingly – that the Frenchman has three areas he intends to strengthen this summer: right-back, goalkeeper and striker.

With Bacary Sagna and Lukasz Fabianski set to depart and Olivier Giroud requiring support up front, it will be an interesting and busy summer transfer window at the Emirates.

Not that one former Gunner believes Wenger should be in charge next season.

In an exclusive interview with Talk Sport, Stewart Robson said he would replace the Frenchman with the man currently in charge at Juventus.

“If I was holding the purse strings the first thing I would do is bring in Antonio Conte as my new manager,” Robson said. “He’s the best coach in Europe.”

“A lot of players have gone backwards since they’ve been at Arsenal. One of the reasons why players have left in recent years, it’s not for more money or titles, it’s because they have felt their football development has been stunted by Arsene Wenger.”

That is a very bold statement and one that many Arsenal fans would no doubt disagree with. But following their FA Cup success, the Gunners must now kick on.

They have no more excuses having ended their trophy hoodoo after nine years, and whether Wenger or a new man is in charge next season, they have to do the business.
