Manchester United may have found the answer to their midfield problems, following high praise from their current striker Robin van Persie.
The United striker won the plaudits for his outstanding goal in Holland’s 1-1 draw with Ecuador on Saturday. But it was the assist that had van Persie purring.
The ball was laid on a plate by Feyenoord’s Jordy Clasie – a name that has rarely been more apt – and speaking after the match the United striker could not help but single him out.
In quotes published by Goal, van Persie said, “That pass made the goal possible. That pass was a world-class ball. That pass gave me the opportunity to do my thing.
“I think that pass was more beautiful than my goal. The only thing I had to do was control the ball and score. That pass from Clasie was world-class.”
So, just in case you did not get that, it was a pretty damn fine pass. And it begs the question: Should United move for the 22-year-old this summer?
With Louis van Gaal now confirmed as their new manager, United will now set about signing the players who can turn them into contenders once more, with midfield a key area of renovation.
Clasie may not be at the level of the likes of Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas – both regularly touted as potential United signings – but van Gaal knows him well, and he is being tipped for the very top of the game.
The young star has previously been linked with Arsenal, Everton and Manchester City to name a few; but could and should United bring him to Old Trafford and hope he continues to deliver those “world-class” passes to van Persie et al?
